Next Stage

WHAT NOW?

We are delighted to report that a significant milestone has been reached in the project to provide a community store in Preston Candover. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council granted planning permission on 2nd March 2018 for the new store application.

This clears the way for the next phase of the project, which is to raise funds to enable the building work to commence. £200,000 is required, not just for the build but also to fit it out, buy stock and provide working capital for the store. We plan to raise money in  three ways – from donations, grants and the setting up of a share membership scheme, which will be open to everyone and which we hope will be widely supported.

The share membership scheme will be launched in the Preston Candover Village Hall at 7pm on Thursday 26th April, ending at 9pm. Please make a note in your diary and do come along to find out more. Drinks will be served from 7pm and from 7.30pm there will be a presentation about the scheme, including information from the Plunkett Foundation, a charity which facilitates community ventures around the country and has been involved in several successful community shops.

At the presentation, full details of the share offer will be explained and information will be made available for you to take away and consider at your leisure. Following the meeting, the details will also be distributed by hand to every household in the valley, so that everyone has the chance to become a member of the new store, which will be run by the community for the community. Shares will cost £20 each and decisions affecting the store will be taken by shareholders. Regardless of the number of shares held, each shareholder only gets one vote, so this a real opportunity to influence how the store is run and its long term future.

Please do get involved, 2018 looks to be a very exciting year for the community store project.

Canterton Stores – New opening hours and Staff Required

In the meantime, Jane and Rob continue to support the project from Canterton Stores for which we remain very grateful. They are trialling new hours in January and have asked us to inform you that the shop will now open at 10am and close at 4.30pm. (with the lunch hour remaining 1 – 2pm and Wed & Sat remaining 1/2 days.) They also have staff vacancies for Wed am, Friday pm and alternate Saturdays so if you’re looking for a few hours work a week please call Rob or Jane on 01256 389241.

We hope to see many of you on 26th April and look forward to an exciting 2018.

Canterton Stores – we continue to support Canterton Stores and ask that you do too. It is financially beneficial if the current store remains open and the post office contract can be transferred to the new community store, so please shop there if you can.
